When Loon Mountain first opened in the winter of 1966, there wasn’t a whole lot to do besides ski, eat fondue, and pretend to enjoy mulled wine. Back then, town of Lincoln was a sleepy hamlet anchored by a struggling paper mill with few amenities.

Fast-forward 50 years, and things look a lot different. From snowshoe tours to microbreweries, Loon – and the Lincoln-Woodstock area – offer plenty of fun things to do. In honor of Loon’s 50th anniversary, we came up 50 ways to make the most of your visit to our little corner of the White Mountains. Here are the first 10.  To see the rest, just go online and visit the Loon Mountain Blog.

1.    Go South, Young Man (or Woman)

Park at the base of South Peak the next time you go skiing or riding at Loon. You’ll carve wide-open cruisers, take in jaw-dropping views into downtown Lincoln, and rack up tons of vert riding the Lincoln Express Quad.

2.    If the Snowshoe Fits
Don’t feel like skiing or snowboarding? We offer guided summit snowshoe tours here at Loon. Ride the gondola to the summit and explore snowy, hidden alpine trails that few people ever get to see. Make a reservation by calling 603-745-6281 ext. 5562.

3.    Waffle Me
Enjoy an on-slope waffle from the Waffle Cabin at the base of South Peak.

4.    You Must Zip It
Swing by the Adventure Center here at Loon, where you can zipline over the frozen Pemigewasset River. Available weekends, holidays, and vacation weeks. For dates and hours of operation go to LoonMtn.com.

5.    We’ve Got You Covered
Forgot your goggles at home? Again? No worries. Loon Mountain Sports will supply you with whatever item (goggles, gloves, hand warmers) that’s currently collecting dust at the bottom of your closet. Located in the Octagon and Governor Adams lodges.

6.    Stay Classy, Beginners
Don’t know how to ski? Sign up for one of Loon’s First Class Beginner’s Weekends and you’ll learn to ski, rock out at a Saturday night après party, and score a free pair of HEAD skis, boots, and bindings – while supplies last. Reserve by calling 800-229-LOON.

7.    On a Roll
On cold days, warm up with a jerk chicken Reggae Roll at the Caribbean-themed Summit Café. Be sure to wash it all down with a classic Rum Punch. Located at the top of the Gondola.

8.    All Aboard!
Tired of schlepping your skis across the parking lot? Hop aboard the J.E. Henry Railroad, our antique steam locomotive. This wood-fired beast will transport you the 600 feet between the Octagon and Governor Adams lodges.

9.    ‘80s Day
Help us celebrate a decade of straight skis, big hair, and bold fashion choices. Once the lifts close, rock out to ‘80s cover band Fast Times. April 1, 2017.

10.    Pray for Snow
Join Loon Mountain Ministry for a nondenominational mountaintop service on Loon Peak every winter Sunday at 11:30 a.m. Visit Loonmtnministry.com
